I’d like to ask you a question or two…

My week in pictures… Ice Wine Festival with the girls celebrating my birthday, getting totally spoiled, meeting Joey Coleman at ‘The Art Of Sales’, speaking at GTA Private Club, enjoying Toronto Women’s Expo with fellow female entrepreneurs and founder, Randi Goodman.

CAROL’S COMMENTARY

Happy Friday! from where I sit once again in the beautiful Colette Grand Café Bakery. I think I want to officially make this my Happy Friday writing spot. There is nothing like sipping on a fabulous Americano Misto in a fancy white cup and saucer (or tasse and sous-tasse as the French would say!), a fresh flower on a crisp blue placemat at my cute little table for 1, French music swooning in the background, and where the baristas know me by name.

One’s environment certainly has an effect on one’s mood. Wouldn’t you agree?

So this past week was a good mix of both work and pleasure. Although somewhat back to the grind, the birthday celebrations continued… this girl was spoiled! 5 days into my new year (29 again!) and I’m feeling pretty optimistic.

What are YOU most excited about this year?

This week I had the privilege of listening to a lot of great speakers, and had the privilege of being one of the keynote speakers myself at the GTA Private Club launch party. Speakers have the power to truly affect my mood, my emotions (Dan Blackburn even made me cry!), my thinking. Sometimes it’s through their content, however more often than not it is through the asking of powerful questions.

I love speaking, but I love even more creating an experience for the audience. And one way I love to do this is through the asking of questions.

As you may know, last week was the inaugural Pure Coach training, an amazing experience co-facilitating with James MacNeil. I am a big believer in the power of coaching, and love what it can do. It really can be transformational and life changing. And at the heart of it is mastering the art of asking empowering questions.

They say the quality of your relationships is determined by the quality of your communication. And the quality of your communication is affected by the quality of your conversations. And the quality of your conversations is affected by – you guessed it – your ability to ask good questions.

You want to really get to know someone? You want to get them to share, to open up, to self disclose. Instead of ‘yes’ and ‘no’ and ‘fine’ and ‘good’, if you want better answers, you have to ask better questions.

There was a speed networking component to the Launch party where I spoke this week, and all around me I heard the same few questions being asked. You want to get a real sense of someone right off the bat and make a real connection within the first few minutes? Ask different, deeper questions.

Instead of ‘What do you do?’ how about ‘What excites you most about what you do?’ Instead of ‘What are you working on?’ how about ‘What do you really want this year?’

And so, I am going to ask YOU a few questions this week. And then I am going to challenge you to ask others some of these questions, too. And really listen to the answers. You just might be surprised about what you learn.

  • What do you really want?
  • What are you most excited about? What lights you up?
  • What are you grateful for right here, right now?
  • How can you make a difference in somebody’s life, today?
  • If time or money were no object, what would you be doing right now?
  • What do you truly love about yourself?
  • Where are you having fun in your life? Where could you have more fun?
  • What do you want more of, less of, in your life?
  • What does happiness look like – feel like – to you?
  • What is one step you could take, right now, that might bring you closer to something you’ve always wanted to do, or someone you’ve always wanted to be?

You want powerful connection? Create powerful communication. You want powerful communication? Create powerful conversation. You want powerful conversation? Ask powerful questions. (Click to tweet it out!)

Have a FAB week!
