That dreaded 4-lettered ‘F’ word…

May 4, 2018 by Carol Schulte Leave a Comment

Oh, that dreaded 4-letter ‘F’ word!

And NO, I’m not talking about that one ~ get your head out of the gutter!

I’m talking about FEAR.

Fear seems to be all around these days.

While presenting at Achievers this week (we had so much fun!), during a partner breakout on powerful conversations, what came up most often as to what holds us back is fear. Fear of failure, fear of looking bad, fear of getting it wrong.

In a recent yoga class, the instructor was talking about the power of leaning into, and eventually letting go of, our fears.

And while having the pleasure of watching ‘A conversation with Ellen’ the week before last while in Calgary, one of the points of conversation that stuck out the most was the one on fear.

‘It isn’t even REAL!’ she shared. And then began to share the acronym, saying fear is simply:

False

Evidence

Appearing

Real

And on the contrary, the only thing that IS real, she said, is LOVE.

The problem is, the majority of us out there – myself included – still experience fear.

It’s what holds so many of us back from playing bigger in our work (going after that promotion, raising our hand in that meeting), and playing bigger in our lives (learning that sport we’ve always wanted to try, committing to saving for that dream vacation)

Yes, I have fears. Boy oh boy do I have fears!

I’ll jump right to the biggest ones…

I’m afraid I’ll never get married. I’m afraid I won’t be able to have children. And I’m afraid I will die with too much potential still in me.

But here’s the thing I’m starting to realize. NONE of those are real ~ and as long as I focus on them, who’s to say they won’t become reality?

So if fear isn’t going anywhere any time soon (because it isn’t!), it’s time to use our fears and learn some new strategies to take on in spite of them.

1.  Look at your fear as an indicator of where you need to spend your energy and attention

Now I don’t mean I want you to spend your energy on the fear itself, instead I‘m inviting you to focus on what IS in your control. If you’re afraid something is going to happen, it likely means you want the opposite to happen. And if one is possible, the other is also equally as possible! If you’re afraid of never reaching your potential, have you defined what that potential is? Have you set a small goal that is in alignment with your bigger vision? Whatever we focus on, expands. So let’s do all we can to ensure our biggest fears do NOT become a reality.

2. Look at your fear as your friend

In Elizabeth Gilbert’s book ‘Big Magic’ she speaks about ‘our dear friend fear.’  She calls it her friend because in her world she’s recognised whenever she’s about to embark on a new creative journey, her friend fear is there, whether she wants it there or not. So, she’s taken to inviting it along for the ride. She even gives it the seat in the car, but ensures she NEVER allows it to sit in the driver’s seat.

3. Look at your fear as way to measure your growth

If you’re feeling the fear, chances are you’re thinking about taking action, or are already in action, towards something that makes you uncomfortable. How exciting is that! After all, the magic always happens outside of our comfort zones. And nothing big ever happens without first pushing through the discomfort. So if you’re feeling the fear, chances are you’re growing!

‘Anything you’ve ever wanted is on the other side of fear.’ ~ George Addair.

And it’s true.

So, what do you REALLY want?

And how can you take one small step today, in spite of your fears, to get closer to making that one thing a reality?

I’m committed to helping individuals and organisations push past fear in order to live their biggest lives, both at work and at play. If you’re curious to see how I may be able to support you or your organisation, let’s set up a time to chat!

Happy Friday, and have a FAB weekend!

3 Questions To Gain The Clarity You’re Looking For

February 23, 2018 by Carol Schulte Leave a Comment

I was recently re-reading Napolean Hill’s classic text, ‘Think & Grow Rich.’ It took him over TWO DECADES to write! And for good reason ~ there are some amazing nuggets in there.

Actually, there are 16… well, 16 laws of success he calls them.

The first two laws of success (there are 16 in total) are Definiteness of Purpose and Desire.

Until you know exactly what it is you want (which, of course, is always changing) you can’t know what your next step is.

Watch this week’s video to find out the 3 most important questions to ask yourself to gain more clarity and direction in your life.

[video_player type=”youtube” youtube_remove_logo=”Y” style=”1″ dimensions=”560×315″ width=”560″ height=”315″ align=”center” margin_top=”0″ margin_bottom=”20″ ipad_color=”black”]aHR0cHM6Ly95b3V0dS5iZS9zRW9pWVNjTUJsTQ==[/video_player]

So there you have it. It’s as simple as WHAT, WHY, and HOW.

Ask yourself these three simple, yet important questions today.

And, of course now I want to hear from you.

What do YOU really want?
Why?
And how are you going to take action on it?

Share your ideas in the comments or on the YouTube channel.

And feel free to share this video with someone in your life you think could benefit. Sharing is caring, after all!

Have a FAB week!

Not everyone is going to like you…

October 20, 2017 by Carol Schulte Leave a Comment

Not everyone is going to like you…

Happy Friday!

Today I’m coming to you from my balcony… giving you a glimpse into where I’ve been living now we’re no longer in the hustle and bustle of the city centre (I kinda miss the buzz, to be honest!)

But I do like being able to see the mountains. And I like still being close to the beach. I like a lot of things!

And, I’ll admit it, I also like to be liked.

And I know I’m not alone.

Although it comes from a good place ~ it’s nice to be nice to others, to belong, and to genuinely want to be helpful, thoughtful, and caring ~ there is also such thing as caring too much.

Being in a new relationship, I’m conscious of wanting to fit in with the family, wanting to be accepted, and wanting to be liked.

However, if you are a good person, a genuine person, and your motivations are pure, it shouldn’t matter what others think. Sometimes easier said than done, no?!?

Watch this week’s video to learn 3 harsh truths about caring a lot (dare I say too much) about what others’ think, that will save you a lot of precious time and energy.

Again, here are the three (somehow harsh!) truths:

  1. Not everyone is going to like you.
  1. No matter how hard you try, you cannot control others’ feelings or reactions towards you.
  1. People care so much less than you think they do!

And remember, as Don Miguel Ruiz shares in his book The Four Agreements, what others think of you is none of your business!

Are you someone who cares a little too much at times what others think? Or do you know someone else who does? Share this video with them ~ and let’s keep the conversation going.

Which truth most resonated most with you? And what are you going to do this week as a result?

I want to hear from you in the comments below.

Have a FAB week!

How to Remember People’s Names in 7 Fool-Proof Steps!

July 21, 2017 by Carol Schulte 1 Comment

My Week in Pics: Working hard at some of the cute neighbourhood cafes, enjoying farewell brunches, gelato, and local cuisine, watching Vivaldi being performed at the ancient Klementinum, camping for a night at Melt Festival in Germany (and swimming in the lake with Pippi Longstocking!), completing a Prague Outdoor Escape, visiting Little Hanoi, and going to a beer spa!!!

How to Remember People’s Names in 7 Fool-Proof Steps!

Happy Friday!

And greetings no longer from Prague, but rather my beautiful home town in Oakville (which has actually exceeded the population for a town, and so is technically now a city. Yet everyone still refers to it as at own because, well, it sounds more quaint!) Random Friday fact for you!

I flew back across the pond yesterday, and am excited to be en route to New Orleans, where I’m looking forward to presenting at the International Association of Administrative Professionals (iaap) annual Summit.

I have to say I love attending and participating in conferences and summits. I love the energy, I love the learning, and I love the meeting of a whole lotta new people.

And ideally, I love going beyond simply meeting them to actually connecting with them.

In last week’s post, I shared some ideas and easy to implement strategies that help to build instant and lasting connection. One of them was asking, and remembering, people’s names. And I promised to go deeper into this strategy this week.

So, that is exactly what we’re going to do today! Watch today’s video to learn the 7 easy, fool-proof steps to remembering people’s names.

***WARNING!*** After you watch this video you’ll no longer be able to use the excuse “I’m useless at remembering names!” because now you’ll have the steps… And once you learn something, you can’t unlearn it.

Once again, the steps are:

  1. Present
  2. Listen
  3. Association
  4. Impression
  5. Scribe
  6. Interest
  7. Repetition

Are you ready to put these techniques into practice?!? I hope so! And I want to hear how it goes. Test it out, and then share your experiences in the comments below, or on my YouTube channel. And be sure to SUBSCRIBE!

Do you know someone in your life who could benefit from this video? Sharing is caring after all, so send it on over to them!

Have a FAB week!
