celebrate the things-to-do that are already done!

things to do you've already done

At this time of year, things are buzzing. Not only are the leaves bursting with colour, but the world is bursting with action. Back to school and back to work is in full swing, to-do lists are piling high, projects and responsibilities are creeping up and in.

It’s all too easy to get caught up in everything that needs to get done. And it can get stressful, overwhelming, and chaotic pretty fast!

It makes sense. I get it. And I am right there with you! Perhaps, however, it needn’t have to be that way…

Although it seems to be human nature (don’t ask me why!) to first focus on everything you still have to do, what if we could switch that around? What if we could first focus on everything you successfully managed to have already done?

This week, my fabulous coach suggested I look at all I have accomplished over the last little while, instead of getting caught up in everything I have not yet done. And so, I came up with a Things-To Do-That-Are-Already-Done List’.

Now you may be thinking who the heck has time to do that? Perhaps you are barely finding enough time to make a grocery list! That may be true. But I’m going to let you in on a little secret.

There will always be heaps more to do and lots more to get done. So, you can be victim to your to-dos, or you can instead allow yourself to celebrate the already-dones.

After writing out the list, I will admit couldn’t help but smile. It turns out I have done quite a bit already! From teaching myself how to build my own website, to officially registering the business, to the logo to the biz cards to the ‘be emspired’ newsletter to my first (pro bono) client…

I may not be where I thought I would be, or where I may like to be, but I’m doing alright. And I am still in action. Baby steps.

When hiking up a mountain (not that I do this very often mind you!) I tend to look towards the peak. I tend to focus on the place I want to get to, and the long road still ahead. But then every now and again, I allow myself to look back at where I came from, and to celebrate the distance already traveled.

Once in a while, it’s important to take time to acknowledge how far you’ve already come, and to celebrate all you have already done.

So the mountain is our journey, our goals, our dreams, our lists. (go with me on this one!) It’s important to have a place to reach towards, a destination if you will. And, it is also equally important to acknowledge and celebrate the steps along the way. Because that’s where life happens, that’s what life is about. The journey. It’s cliché but true.

It is good to have an end to journey toward, but it is the journey that matters in the end.” ~ Ursula K. Le Guin

Today, and this week, acknowledge all of the things to do that you’ve already done, and celebrate how far you’ve already come. And for those who dare, make your own ‘Things-To-Do-That-Are-Already-Done list.’ You may just surprise yourself!

Have a FAB week, everyone.

Love your message Carol! It can be so easy to relentlessly focus on the road ahead, which makes us forget to enjoy the journey itself and – perhaps more importantly? – instil a feeling that we have to ‘fight’ against time to get things done. At least that’s how I feel! This usually leaves me feeling deflated, thinking that there’s never enough time, so I end up wasting a lot of valuable energy worrying and coming up with plan B’s. While reading your post, I thought of all that I have achieved so far, and guess what? It put a big smile on my face too… AND an immediate boost to keep on going 🙂
Congrats on all that you have achieved in such a short period of time, just checked out Empire’s site. Looks very professional! Keep up the amazing work!!
